Gonzo, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Gonzo is Tetra's first mate who steers her ship. He cares deeply about Tetra, and despite his tough appearance and demeanor is actually very emotionally sensitive, especially if Tetra is in danger. His family has been serving the royal family of Hyrule for countless generations and continues to do so afterward, as seen by his descendent Alfonzo.

History[edit]

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker[edit]

In The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Gonzo is first seen on board the ship alongside Senza, trying to shoot down the Helmaroc King (who was kidnapping Tetra) with the ship's catapult. Once they succeed, Tetra is dropped into the Forest of Fairies on Outset Island, and Gonzo seemingly begins arguing with Senza on the deck. Link, who sees the whole thing through Aryll's telescope, goes up to save her himself, and once he finds her, Gonzo arrives to take her back to the ship. However, the Helmaroc King then takes Aryll, leading Link to ask to come on board the ship to chase after it. Tetra and Gonzo initially refuse, but begrudgingly accept after Quill speaks with them. Gonzo still dislikes Link, repeatedly calling him "shrimp" and promising to feed him to sharks if he gets homesick midway through.

On the trip to the Forsaken Fortress, Gonzo can be found at the wheel. If spoken to, he tells Link that he is making him feel uncomfortable and he needs to get out of his way and go see Niko below. He also can be seen shouting to Zuko to keep an eye out. Once the fortress is reached, Gonzo simply tells him to hurry up and meet Tetra in the crow's nest. Once Link is launched into the fortress from the catapult, Gonzo awkwardly waves goodbye to him.

After this, Gonzo and the other pirates are not seen until they raid the Bomb Shop. Quill had gone to tell them about Link being in danger, and after Gonzo showed some concern, mentioned Link's need to get Nayru's Pearl from Jabun, now hiding at Outset Island. This gave the pirates the idea to go there first, only to be blocked by the giant door to Jabun's cave, thus realizing they needed bombs. At the bomb shop, Gonzo scolds the bound Bomb-Master Cannon on the outrageous prices he was demanding, then talks with Mako. He claims that his seeming worry about Link was simply him being sneaky, though since Mako notes that Gonzo has never been this cunning before, it is implied his concern was real. After Mako makes a joke about a potential child of Tetra and Gonzo being the smartest pirate ever, Gonzo gets embarrassed, while Tetra tells them to stop goofing around. Tetra tells them she plans to sail as soon as they are done packing up the bombs, and Gonzo tries to persuade her to let them spend the night at Windfall Island first. After she notices Link hiding in the rafters, she agrees, calling them fools and babies. On the way out of the shop, Gonzo tells Mako the password Niko is using to guard the ship.

Gonzo is later seen at the Forsaken Fortress at Link's second trip there, where he and Senza rescue Mila and Maggie. Then, Tetra orders Gonzo to take Aryll back to the ship as well due to Link still needing to defeat the Helmaroc King. After Tetra goes missing due to hiding from Ganondorf, Gonzo spends most of the time crying according to a letter from Aryll. He is not seen again until the pirates, the sages, and Aryll pick up Link and Tetra at the end of the game.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass[edit]

In The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Gonzo again mans the wheel of Tetra's ship. He is only seen in the opening and the ending. In the introduction, he is briefly shown to tell how the seas they are sailing are rumored to be protected by a spirit called the Ocean King, which he figures would protect ships against the supposed Ghost Ship. He is later shown gasping in horror at Tetra leaping onto the actual Ghost Ship and screaming, then watches Link jump after her before the ships are separated by the fog bank. In the ending, he wordlessly backs up Mako saying that Tetra and Link were only on the ship for around ten minutes, then notices it has disappeared. Tetra continues berating Gonzo and Niko for not coming after them and thinking she was having a bad dream, while Link finds proof the adventure was real after all.
