History[edit]

The Legend of Zelda series[edit]

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask[edit]

In The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Skullfish appear throughout the waters of the entire Great Bay region, though they also appear in the pond on the path to Goron Village in spring. They immediately charge at Link for a bite when approached, and due to their small size and the murkiness of the water, it can be difficult to notice them coming aside from a characteristic clacking noise they make when they see him. Zora Link's boomerangs and electrical abilities can defeat them easily. Giant ones called Desbrekos accompany swarms of small ones in the Pirates' Fortress and Great Bay Temple.

In The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D, Skullfish make an appearance as one of the fish in the Ocean Fishing Hole, summoned by wearing the Captain's Hat.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess[edit]

In The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, skullfish have a chunk of meat between their ribs and appear in certain sections of the Lakebed Temple and in certain dig caverns. They are even smaller than before, but appear in large schools of around eight. They swim quickly and try to latch onto Link if he falls in their pool, but are so weak they only deal a fourth of a heart of damage per bite. If one ends up on land, it flops around until it ends up back in the water, but is vulnerable to attack until then. They can also always be safely defeated using water bombs.

They can be caught with the Fishing Rod; however, due to their ravenous swarming keeping the bobber from being fully grabbed, it is difficult to hook one without first defeating most in the school. Additionally, the message upon landing one lists it as "forbidden," meaning it is not recorded in the fish journal. However, a heart is earned.

The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes[edit]

in The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes, Skullfish are a bright turquoise and have large underbites. They solely appear in the Water Temple, Stage 2. They act mostly the same as before, but move even quicker. Due to the lack of underwater swimming in the game, they attack along the surface of the water, and will attempt to leap over small areas of land if a Link stands near the edge of a platform. If they land on solid ground or are pushed up with the Water Rod, they helplessly flop. A quicksand-dwelling version, the Sandfish, appears in the Dunes.

Hyrule Warriors series[edit]

In Hyrule Warriors Legends and Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition, Twilight Princess-styled Skullfish are one of the various types of food for fairies, being part of the "weird" food group.

Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer featuring The Legend of Zelda[edit]

In Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer featuring The Legend of Zelda Skullfish appear in Lake Hylia and the accompanying Frozen Grotto, and can also appear in Future World. They swim along the surface, diving to move to another spot every two beats. Sometimes, they may leap upwards from the water instead. If lured into shallow water, they briefly flop before returning to the deeper areas.
