They made their debut in ''[[mariowiki:Yume Kōjo: Doki Doki Panic|Yume Kōjo: Doki Doki Panic]]'', and also appear in the ''[[mariowiki:Mario (franchise)|Mario]]'' franchise as common enemies. Their coloration in ''[[The Legend of Zelda (series)|The Legend of Zelda]]'' series is the same as in their debut appearance, and its western release, ''[[mariowiki:Super Mario Bros. 2|Super Mario Bros. 2]]''.

If Link strikes a Pokey with his [[sword]], one of its segments breaks off and begins to ricochet around the area. After a while, the segment disappears. To defeat a Pokey, Link must strike its head a few times. Pokeys can also take damage from [[bomb]]s.

In the [[Nintendo Switch]] remake, after Link has completed [[Turtle Rock]], he can go to [[Trendy Game]] to try and win a Pokey [[figurine]].

In ''The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons'', Pokeys appear in [[Samasa Desert]]. They have a slightly different behavior than in ''The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening''; whenever Pokey is struck, its segments do not fly around the area, and if Link strikes a Pokey with his sword a few times, one of its segments break off. Link can also attack Pokeys by shooting [[Scent Seed]]s at them. If Link uses a [[Mystery Seed]] on a Pokey, it gains another segment. Pokeys can have up to four segments.
