Page 15.</ref> (or '''Water of life'''<ref>''The Legend of Zelda'' instruction booklet, page 25.</ref>), is a restorative item which appears in some earlier ''[[The Legend of Zelda (series)|The Legend of Zelda]]'' titles, starting with ''[[The Legend of Zelda (video game)|The Legend of Zelda]]''. It also appears in the [[Philips CD-i]] titles ''[[Link: The Faces of Evil]]'' and ''[[Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon]]''. Its original purpose of restoring [[Link]]'s health is largely replaced by other [[potion]]s, instead being given to other characters in later games.

From the intro, they are respectively known as the '''Life Potion''' and '''2nd Potion'''. When used, the Water of Life fully restores [[Link]]'s health. The Life Potion only has a one-time use while the 2nd Potion can be used twice: when Link first uses the 2nd Potion, it changes back into a Life Potion. If Link has a Life Potion and purchases another, it turns into a 2nd Potion.

Link can only acquire Water of Life from the [[old woman|old women]] in the various caves, after he obtains the [[Letter]]. He can purchase the Life Potion for 40 [[Rupee]]s and the 2nd Potion for 68 Rupees.

In ''[[Zelda II: The Adventure of Link]]'', Link can no longer consume the Water of Life. Instead, its role is as a quest item for [[town folk]]. In the [[Harbor Town of Mido]], an old woman wants the Water of Life to cure her daughter's sickness. The Water of Life can be retrieved from a cave in [[Moruge Swamp]] that requires the [[Hammer]] to enter. If given to the mother, she will allow Link to enter her house and learn the [[Fairy (spell)|Fairy spell]] from the town's [[wise man]]. In this appearance, it resembles a 2nd Potion.

[[Fi]] registers it as a [[dowse|dowsing]] target, which cannot be used within [[Skyview Temple]]. He must scoop it up in an [[Bottle|Empty Bottle]] and return it to her.

By default, the Water of Life refills all hearts on the spot; however, if the player has a [[Canteen]], the Water of Life will be collected in it for later use. In this appearance, it resembles a Life Potion.
