They waddle around slowly until they are on the same x- or y-axis as Link, at which point they will charge into him. In the original versions of the game, they have four spikes and no visible head, gaining green highlights in ''[[The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX|Link's Awakening DX]]''. In the [[Nintendo Switch]] [[The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Nintendo Switch)|remake]], they have seven spikes as with contemporary ''Mario'' appearances and tan heads with black dot eyes. Additionally, the remake adds a Spiny figure as a prize in the [[Trendy Game]], which can be placed on a stand in the northern household of [[Mabe Village]].

They first appear in [[Poison Moth's Lair]] in the former game and the [[Wing Dungeon]] in the latter game, and are overall more common in the former. They can be defeated instantly by making them fly away with [[Gale Seed]]s or [[Mystery Seed]]s using Gale Seeds' effect.

They now have an additional, more prominent spike in the center and their heads are shown to be withdrawn into their shells with glowing eyes visible. Additionally, they now withdraw into their shell and perform a spin attack towards Link from any direction. They can appear in many places, appearing in a scripted encounter in the [[Chambers of Insight]] and appearing randomly in the [[Sea of Tree]]s, [[Death Mountain]], and [[Palace of Winds|Vaati's Palace]].
