Cheep-Cheeps first appear in ''[[The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening]]'' and ''[[The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX]]''. Cheep-Cheeps only appear in side-scrolling, subterranean areas, including [[dungeon]]s. Cheep-Cheeps only swim back and forth and do not actively target [[Link]]. He can defeat a Cheep-Cheep with a single hit from his [[sword]] or another weapon. If hit by a Cheep-Cheep, Link loses half a [[heart]] of his health. They appear in the underwater passages of [[Angler's Tunnel]] and [[Catfish's Maw]]. If Link is outside the water, a Cheep-Cheep sometimes jumps up at him. While it does this, Link can use the [[Roc's Feather]] to jump on the Cheep-Cheep and defeat it.

In the [[Nintendo Switch]] [[The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Nintendo Switch)|remake]], a Cheep Cheep figure is a prize in the [[Trendy Game]], and it can be placed on a stand in [[old man Ulrira]]'s house.

Cheep Cheeps appear in some underwater passages of ''[[The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons]]'' and ''[[The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages]]''. They act the same as in ''The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening'', although Link can no longer defeat Cheep Cheeps by jumping on them.

In ''The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons'', five Cheep Cheeps appear in the underwater passage from [[Sunken City]] to [[Mt. Cucco]]. In ''The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages'', five Cheep Cheeps appear in two side-scrolling tunnels of [[Jabu-Jabu's Belly]]; two are in the first tunnel and three are in the second tunnel. In the latter game, Link can use the [[Switch Hook]] to defeat the Cheep Cheeps.
