Lanterns, also known as Lamps in some games, are a recurring item in the The Legend of Zelda series. They first appear in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Lanterns are very similar role to candles and portable torches in that they are fueled by a flame, which radiates a little bit of light to brighten Link's surroundings in dark areas. The flame can also light unlit torches, burn small bushes, and melt ice. A Lantern's flame steadily decreases before burning out.

The Lantern is seen in both Link: The Faces of Evil and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon. In the former game, it is acquired by speaking to Horgum in Toyku Lighthouse, while in the latter, it is found in a house in Kobitan. When used, the Lantern lights up dark rooms for around 20 seconds. It is fueled by Lamp Oil, and consumes one refill per use.
Both games have two upgrades for the Lantern. The first is the Magic Lantern, which extends the light time from 20 seconds to 40. The second are the Lantern of Vision in Link: The Faces of Evil and the Fairy Lantern in Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon. Both lanterns allow the player to see the final stage's flying enemies, and do not require Lamp Oil to function.
The Bago-Bago, an enemy seen in both games, puts out the Lantern's light when it hits Link or Zelda. This happens even if the player has an upgraded Lantern.
