The Magician

The Magician also known as the Wizard is a character from the backstory of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. [1]

History

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Impa telling the legend of Zelda to Link.

The Magician was a sorcerer who was close to the king of Hyrule and a close confidant of the crown prince, he sought for the Triforce. He one day brought the crown-prince unexpected news about the king and his younger sister, princess Zelda I. When the magician and prince questioned the princess about the Triforce, he had lost his temper after awhile and threatened to put her into an eternal sleep. She still refused to talk and with his anger, the magician tried to cast a spell on her. The prince was surprised and tried to stop him, but the wizard fought off the prince and chanted the spell. The sorcerer died when Princess Zelda fell to an eternal slumber [2] which can only be broken by uniting the Triforce. [3]

Appearance

He features many wrinkles, has light blue skin, red eyes and long fingernails which are white. He wears a purple robe with a necklace, which seems to resemble the Great Demon King Ganon. He bears a striking resemblance to Carock, the enemy of the Maze Island Palace.

Origin

Hyrule Historia proposes that he could be an offshoot of Ganon's, similarly to Agahnim. However, it also mentions that he could just be another follower of the Great Demon King. [4]

Trivia

  • In the Japanese version, it's never mentioned factually that the Wizard had died, it's only said.
  • He shares a few characteristics with Ganon in the first game, being powerful sorcerers, same skin color, seeking for the Triforce and raging when the Royal Family (specifically Zelda) ruins their plan and giving them a consequence. It could be that he was supposed to be Ganon before turning to the Great Demon King. [5]
  • As he shares similarities to Carock. It could be that they both have the same origin as overgrown Wizzrobes who were close to the King, with the Magician betraying the Royal Family. [6]
  • He's potentially the inspiration for Agahnim. Both were skilled sorcerers and close to the Royal Family, until they snapped. Both are also blue skinned and feature clawed hands.
