Depending on the color, they may wobble in place to the beat or move vertically a small amount of spaces. When defeated, they usually split into Gels, which depending on the color and amount of space can vary from one to four. Some [[Secret Cave]] and [[Temple of Brainstorms]] room layouts feature a metallic gray one that does not split and can only be defeated with specific weapons, though it too is motionless and is instead used as part of a puzzle. Rarely, two blue or white Zols can be found conjoined by a tendril of slime that causes them to together resemble a barred pair of {{wp|eighth note}}s, moving by spinning around each other. Attacking them causes the Zols to separate.

In the future Hyrule, a transparent, colorless type called the [[Phasing Zol]] appears in [[Death Mountain]].
