Boo Buddies,[1][2] also known as Boos,[1] are ghost enemies who appear in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and its Game Boy Color port, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX. They are based on the Boo enemies from the Mario franchise, more specifically Super Mario World,[2] although their behavior differs from Boos.

Link only encounters two Boo Buddies during his adventure, in a dark room of the Bottle Grotto dungeon that has the Power Bracelet. The Boo Buddies are nearly invulnerable in the dark, where they can only be defeated directly if Link shoots four arrows at them. The Boo Buddies move slowly toward Link even when he is facing them, unlike Boos from Mario franchise, who only go after the player if they do not face them.

Link can use Magic Powder to light the two Lamps, causing the whole room to brighten momentarily. When the room gets bright, the Boo Buddies turn dark and weaken, though when the Lamps' flames die out, the Boo Buddies return to normal. The Boo Buddies act the opposite when the room is bright instead of bright, as they attempt to flee from Link. When both Boo Buddies are in this state, Link can defeat them with a single hit from any weapon. When Link defeats the Boo Buddies or if both flee while the room is bright, a Treasure Chest with the Power Bracelet appears.

Trivia

  • Boo Buddies are misspelled Boo Buddles on the 99th page of the Nintendo Player's Guide.
  • Boo Buddies can be defeated from the Magic Rod in the dark, although this cannot occur during normal gameplay because Link only does not obtain the Magic Rod until later in the game.
