It is named after the Nintendo Entertainment System, and promoted both Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. The cereal box has two vertical bags inside, dividing into halves; the left half is "Super Mario Bros. Action Series" and the right half is "Zelda Adventure Series".

The "Super Mario Bros. Action Series" has fruity-flavored Marios, Mushrooms, Goombas, Koopa Troopas, and King Koopas. The "Zelda Adventure Series" has berry-flavored Links, Hearts, Boomerangs, Keys, and Shields.

Included in every box of Nintendo Cereal System was a sticker of a Nintendo character, and the back of every box had a set of twelve trading cards called "Nintendo Power Cards". The boxes also had offers to win a Nintendo Entertainment System Power Set or a Super Mario Bros.-themed cereal bowl.
