Game Boy, known as the Mini Comboy in Korea, is a handheld video game console developed and distributed by Nintendo. Originally released on April 21, 1989, the handheld would grow to dominate the handheld industry through the 1990s and cement Nintendo's legacy in the market. Despite not having a backlit or color screen and being weaker than the competition on a technical level, the Game Boy would be the top seller of multiple generations due to the low price, relatively long battery life, and the pedigree of Nintendo backing the games aspect. The Game Boy would have two major revisions, the Game Boy Pocket in 1996 and the Japan-exclusive Game Boy Light in 1998. The Game Boy would also have two direct successors, the Game Boy Color in 1998 and the Game Boy Advance in 2001, as well as inspire elements of the Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch.
Only one The Legend of Zelda game was released for the Game Boy, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, which released in 1993 as the first portable game of the franchise. In 1998, the game was ported to the Game Boy Color as The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, which features some additional content. In 2019, the game received a Nintendo Switch remake, also titled The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
