The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (commonly abbreviated to SNES) is a home video game console developed and released by Nintendo in 1991. It was first released in Japan as the Super Famicom on November 21, 1990. As the official successor to the NES, the console would continue to cement Nintendo's status in the home market. Despite growing competition from other console manufacturers like Sega, the SNES would ultimately be the best selling console of the generation.
The third mainline entry in the The Legend of Zelda series, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, debuted on this system in 1991. A Link to the Past and three original Zelda titles were also released on the Satellaview subsystem. The original games were BS Zelda no Densetsu, BS Zelda no Densetsu: MAP2 and S Zelda no Densetsu: Inishie no Sekiban, and all were accessible for limited periods from 1995 to 2000. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening is also playable through the SNES with the Super Game Boy peripheral.
