Flute

Should this article include the Flute from The Adventure of Link? The Japanese manuals share the same name, 「笛」 (fue), but the intro of the first game specifically identifies it as a "Recorder" (katakana: フエ), which is a type of flute; in The Adventure of Link, its design is decidedly not a recorder (although the design in the first game is technically off as well since it seems to be missing a hole or two). There is some conflict with the name of the "Flute" from A Link to the Past, which is technically an ocarina, and the one from the CD-i games, which seems to have design features of both NES games. If this article is only covering the version from the first game, I definitely think the article title should really be "Recorder" since it is the in-game name in The Legend of Zelda, Hyrule Warriors (as "8-Bit Recorder"), and Paper Mario: Color Splash. When I made this page, I was definitely confused about the flute resembling an ocarina in A Link to the Past. I'd say we go by your word, but I'd also like to see what Doc's thoughts are on this. I bought the PDF of Clyde's Legend of Localization, so I was trying my best to go by what it was saying. As for the Flute from Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, I was hesitant on adding that as they are clearly different subjects, although the article could be written to cover generic recorders from the franchise overall? The Flute in A Link to the Past is definitely supposed to be an Ocarina (オカリナ, Okarina), but presumably the translators at the time assumed the ocarina was too obscure. It's not completely wrong, since ocarinas are also considered a type of flute, but you'd think the localization decision would have been reverted by the GBA version. That's why the (off-center) Flute Boy is known as the (centered) Ocarina Boy in Japan. Flute can probably be a disambiguation page for Whistle/Recorder and Ocarina (and Zelda II and/or CD-i Flutes if one or both are separate articles). LTL (talk) 15:21, 27 January 2020 (UTC)

We could definitely make a disambig page for Flute. I was going to suggest distinguish templates for the Flute and Ocarina pages, but if Flute itself is a disambig, then it may not be needed. If you want to make the Flute disambig, you have my permission. Otherwise I'm still waiting on Doc's input on the Recorder/Flute naming. Results May Vary (talk) 15:29, 27 January 2020 (UTC)

In fairness, the Zelda II Flute might just be like the Magical Key in that it has been redesigned and several returning items have been repurposed, and there is another Flute Boy in A Link Between Worlds that plays a Zelda II-esque flute, but I'll let Doc decide how to organize it. Sorry it took so long for me to respond, I generally don't mess with item articles that much, but I feel these are just different interpretations of the same thing. The ocarina is probably distinct enough to remain separate, though, since that's far from what most people would think of when they thing "flute." Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 11:18, 18 May 2020 (MDT)
