The Ocarina of Time has the same use in both The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

From the Inventory, the Ocarina of Time can be assigned to either Camera left Button, Camera right Button, or Camera down Button. Whenever the player presses the assigned button, the camera zooms into Link, who then takes out the Ocarina of Time. From a chart, the player decide to press the four C-buttons and A Button, each corresponding to the note of an actual ocarina. By pressing that button, Link plays the note of that button, and an icon corresponding to the pressed button appears on the chart. Each song requires the player to enter a specific combination of buttons. The player can press B to exit from the menu.

There are a few optional features with the Ocarina of Time, likely implemented to replicate the whole functionality of a real world ocarina. The Z and R buttons respectively change the pitch of a note between sharp and flat. Moving the Control Stick up or down respectively raises or lowers the tone of a note. Moving the Control stick left or right adds vibrato.

In the Nintendo 3DS remakes of both games, Link can perform on the Ocarina of Time if the player taps its icon at the bottom-left corner of the screen. Therefore, the player can no longer assign the Ocarina of Time to a specific button. Due to the button layout on Nintendo 3DS units, the buttons were reassigned, with the 3DS's L button replacing the Nintendo 64's A button, and the 3DS's A, R, X, Y buttons respectively replacing the C-up, C-down, C-left, and C-right buttons. The Circle Pad or the D-pad can be used to alter the notes in the same way as the Nintendo 64's Control Stick.
