Arrghus is a type of large cycloptic jellyfish, typically found floating above water. They are capable of manipulating smaller entities known as Arrgi to surround them and sometimes shoot them out as weapons. Unlike Baris, Arrghuses are not electric. They are typically bosses or mini-bosses in water-themed areas. In the games they appear in, they are often fought multiple times, and as such are seemingly a species instead of an individual. Their English name comes from Argus Panoptes, a Greek mythological figure with an eye-covered body.

History

The Legend of Zelda series

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

In The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Arrghus is the boss of the Swamp Palace, and is depicted as a red, transparent jellyfish. Its Arrgi, depicted as orange spheres with "angry" eye-like designs, can be removed with the Hookshot item, and then slashed to destroy them. Once all the Argii are defeated, Arrghus will leap around the room and slide between the corners. At this point, it can be attacked, eventually defeating it.

In the Palace of the Four Sword of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past + Four Swords, an orange Arrghus is found. Instead of the typical Arrgi, it surrounds itself with dark green Baris, thus adding the challenge of removing them without being shocked.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

Arrghuses reappear in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, where it is the main mid-boss of the Great Bay Temple, guarding the Ice Arrows. Internationally, they are referred to by their Japanese name, Wart. In The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D, all Western releases other than the English one corrected this to their respective typical name for Arrghus. Instead of being a jellyfish, Wart is depicted as a large ovoid mass with green scales and brown areas on the top and bottom. On its back, its shape tapers into a point, resembling a tail. Its eye is also quite large compared to before. The Arrgi are depicted as pink bubble-like spheres. The Arrgi again can be removed with the Hookshot as they circle around Wart. Wart will periodically open and close its eye; once its eye is hit, the Arrgi will all bounce off from Wart and bounce in place, and Wart will slide around the room quickly. Hitting it more will eventually defeat it. Later, another Wart is found in the Secret Shrine, along with the other main dungeon mid-bosses.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

In The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Arrghus is again the boss of the Swamp Palace. It is the only Dark World boss to be fought in Lorule instead of being replaced by a permutated variant like most are. Arrghus is now opaque and lumpy, and its Arrgi are depicted as eyes within bubbles. It only has a small amount of Arrgi, which it moves in Link's direction to cover that side of itself. Once again, the Arrgi can be removed by the Hookshot. Once they all are destroyed, the sclera of Arrghus's eye turns black, and it floats slowly away from Link while shooting lasers in the water, causing jets of water to shoot up a few seconds later. Attacking it further eventually causes it to be destroyed. Later, a yellow and green one is fought in Lorule Castle as one of its four minibosses.

The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes

In The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes, Arrghus is the boss of the Water Temple, the fourth area of Riverside. It is a tall, lavender jellyfish that glows cyan, and initially floats over a large pool of water in the center of the room. Its Arrgi are depicted as eyes with slit pupils. Several Arrgi circle around its base and shoot at a Link when they see him. They can also be pulled off with the Gripshot. They can be destroyed with two sword slashes, and if they aren't, they fall in the water and circle back to Arrghus, but can be halted with the Water Rod. After all the Arrgi are destroyed, the water drains, leaving a basin with Arrghus lowers into, and gains a new ring of Arrgi. The Links must destroy all the Arrgi again, and it will start to fly around the basin charging up a laser from its eye. Link must then hit its eye with the Gripshot, knocking Arrghus unconscious and causing it to stop glowing. From here, it can be repeatedly slashed with the sword, but it will eventually wake up. After repeating this sufficiently, it will be defeated. It is the first boss in the game to have a purple Rupee in the stash of Rupees it releases.

A Link to the Past comic

Arrghus is depicted as an enormous red mass of tentacles attached to a giant featureless red orb, and appears in its role in the game.
