Lanterns, also known as Lamps in some games, are a recurring item in the The Legend of Zelda series. They first appear in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Lanterns are very similar role to candles and portable torches in that they are fueled by a flame, which radiates a little bit of light to brighten Link's surroundings in dark areas. The flame can also light unlit torches, burn small bushes, and melt ice. A Lantern's flame steadily decreases before burning out.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

In The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, the Lamp is one of the first items that Link receives. It can be found inside a Treasure Chest in Link's House, although if Link not collect the Lamp from the chest in his house, it can be found inside Hyrule Castle, either in the castle's secret entrance or in Princess Zelda's cell. Zelda does not allow Link to enter the Secret Passage without the Lamp.

The Lamp is powered by the Magic Meter when used to light torches, although it automatically lights up in dark areas without using any magic.

In the Game Boy Advance remake, the Lamp's flame can damage enemies. It normally hits enemies twice, but it cannot burn them.

The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures

In The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, Lamps are found on various Item Podiums. When the Links use Lamps to burn objects, Force Gems appear. Lamps are the only items that cannot be upgraded to Level 2 by a Great Fairy.

The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

In The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, there is a specific type of Lantern, the Flame Lantern, which functions the same as regular ones.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

In The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Coro gives Link a Lantern when they first meet. It is fueled by Lantern Oil. Coro admits that he provided the Lantern for free as a sales tactic so that Link will always return to buy more Lantern Oil. The Lantern is essential to navigate dark areas such as Lantern Caverns, burn cobwebs, ignite torches to open doors, summon certain Treasure Chests, or even disperse poisonous fog. It also keeps the Poison Mites in Arbiter's Grounds from jumping on Link. If Link lights the Lantern in the Bomb Shop, Barnes panics and turns on the sprinklers to douse the flames.

In The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, there is a specific type of Lantern, the Ghost Lantern, which lights up whenever a Poe is nearby.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

In The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, the Lamp is found in a Treasure Chest in a hidden passage beneath the Sanctuary. It can later be replaced by the Super Lamp after clearing the advanced course of the Treacherous Tower.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, there is a sticker of a Lantern, which depicts its artwork from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. It gives a +7 bonus to flame resistance, and can only be applied to Link, Toon Link, Zelda, or Ganondorf.

Hyrule Warriors

In Hyrule Warriors, the Lantern appears as one of the Item Cards found on the Twilight Map from the Twilight Princess Pack DLC. Its Item Card can be used on the search screen to light torches to reveal hidden enemies.

The Big Poe's Lantern wielded by Big Poes, Hylian Ghosts, and Spirit of the Caves appear as their Silver Material drops and Icy Big Poe's Talisman (Snowman-shaped lanterns) wielded by Icy Big Poe appear as their Silver Material drop.
