Swords are one of the main weapons of The Legend of Zelda games. It is Link's main offensive weapon in the main series, the Super Smash Bros. series, and Soulcalibur II. There are several enemies with a specific variant that carries a sword around, such as Sword Moblins. Characters with a sword are usually also equipped with a shield as their defensive weapon. In many games, Link starts out with a weak sword but acquires a more powerful one later on, usually the Master Sword.

In the first The Legend of Zelda, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Link starts his adventure equipped with a generic sword. In Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Link starts with the Magical Sword, which he obtains late in the first game. In The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Link starts with the Kokiri Sword.

Link's dexterity is often determined by which hand he holds the sword in. Link holds the sword in his left hand in most games except the Wii release of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
