- “SPECTACLE ROCK LEADS TO DEATH”
- – Old man, The Legend of Zelda
Spectacle Rock is a recurring location in the The Legend of Zelda series. It features two large rocks that together resemble a pair of spectacles, hence the name. Similar locations can b found in other games, like Eyeglass Lake and Spectacle Island, the latter of which is indicated to be a different form of the original.
History
The Legend of Zelda series
The Legend of Zelda
Spectacle Rock is found up north, on Death Mountain. Bombing part of it reveals the path to the final labyrinth, also known as Death Mountain.
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
Spectacle Rock, along with the rest of the first game's map, can be found in the southwestern corner of Hyrule. Using the Power Bracelet to move one of the rocks leads into the remains of the Death Mountain labyrinth, where Link can find the Hammer.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Spectacle Rock appears at the top of Mount Hebra, and the "lenses" are now joined. Link must pass it in order to get to the Tower of Hera. To do so, he must travel to the Dark World, where only the shape of its base on the ground is present, and then warp back, thus ending up on top of it.
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
Spectacle Rock makes a small cameo over Turtle Rock, and contains an exit door from it. Its presence is likely a nod to it and Turtle Rock both being on the mountains in A Link to the Past.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Although never specified as Spectacle Rock, there are two conspicuous miniature volcanoes side-by-side in the Death Mountain Crater that are likely intended to be Spectacle Rock. One of them has a Piece of Heart on top. Both of these rocks seem to be traveled inside from within the Fire Temple, with one being optional.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Spectacle Rock appears in the same location as in A Link to the Past.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Spectacle Rock is now depicted as a pair of squarish mesas in the Gerudo region with a natural bridge running between them. One of them has the Wasteland Tower on it, and the other a large amount of rocks. Once Vah Naboris is rescued from Thunderblight Ganon, it stands on the one without the tower to fire upon Calamity Ganon.
