The Magical Shield, also called the magic shield[1] and formatted magical shield[2], is a shield used by Link in the first two games, The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. It can usually be identified by a large Cross-like shape on the front.

History[edit]

The Legend of Zelda series[edit]

The Legend of Zelda[edit]

In The Legend of Zelda, the Magical Shield can be bought from various shops, priced at either 90, 130, or 160 rupees. Unlike regular shields, the Magical Shield can deflect spells from Wizzrobes, beams from Lynels, and fireballs from Zolas. The Magical Shield is larger than normal shields, allowing for more protection against projectiles. Like Likes can swallow Magical Shields, so if that happens, Link cannot recover it unless he buys another one from a merchant.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link[edit]

In Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Link uses a Magical Shield as a defensive weapon for the entire game. By default, Link holds the shield in front to defend the upper half of his body, but if he crouches, he can defend the lower half. The Magical Shield cannot protect against fire. Unlike other games, Link cannot upgrade his shield, although the Reflect spell allows him to deflect spells from Wizards.

Zelda's Adventure[edit]

In Zelda's Adventure, the Magic Shield can be purchased in the Forest of Ogham for 500 rupees. It blocks projectiles when Zelda is standing still, explained in the manual as concentrating to make its magic work.[3] The shield is circular and bears little resemblance to other incarnations.

Soulcalibur II[edit]

In the GameCube version of Soulcalibur II, the Magic Sword & Magic Shield is a weapon set usable by Link. It can be bought in Weapon Master mode for 3000 Gold. The shield is said to be enchanted with a protective spell yet quite ancient, causing 40% block damage and being weak against physical impact. The symbol on the shield has been heavily redesigned to only vaguely resemble a cross.

Hyrule Warriors[edit]

In Hyrule Warriors, an unnamed shield presumed to be the Magical Shield comes with the Magical Sword. It has been redesigned again, this time looking closer to a cross composed of Force Gems.
