“Wh-what was THAT?! I don't know what just happened, but it doesn't look good. Let's just stay away from those trains. I think that would be best.”
Princess Zelda, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks

Dark Trains are aggressive and deadly possessed trains that patrol the Spirit Tracks.

History[edit]

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks[edit]

Dark Trains are the most widespread rail enemy in The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, appearing in all four main realms. They begin appearing after the Forest Temple is completed, with a brief cutscene showing the trains being possessed and transformed. They are a light blue color with a furnace-like "face" and several red-hot asymmetrical exhaust pipes jutting out from behind. Compared to the boxy, trolley-like trains they were formed from, they are a more smooth and round shape.

They attempt to kamikaze attack the Spirit Train, with their pursuit being marked by a sudden frantic music. They are faster than the Spirit Train but pick their paths completely randomly and only within specific areas. The paths they take are marked with a blue arrow on the map. Additionally, five hits with the cannon causes them to temporarily lose their fire and slow down. However, they are first encountered before the cannon is acquired. At forks in the track, the player can potentially let one pass by going onto the other path and stopping. If two run into each other, they stop, rotate around their bases, and start moving the other way. If a Dark Train successfully hits the Spirit Train, both are destroyed, leading to a Game Over. Later, even more dangerous Armored Trains start appearing as well.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Dark Trains appear as stage hazards in both Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Spirit Train stage. Unlike before, they merely push the train around rather than destroy it. The former game also gives them a trophy.
