Komali, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Komali, formally known as Prince Komali, is the young Rito heir in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. He is the Rito Chiefain's son and like the other Rito, lives on Dragon Roost Island.

As a young child, Komali was very close to his grandmother, who was the attendant of the Rito's guardian spirit, Valoo. After she passed away, Komali shut himself away from the rest of the tribe, staying in his room holding Din's Pearl, which she had given to him as a gift and is the only thing that can keep him calm. When it came time for him to perform the Rito tradition of getting a scale from Valoo to be able to fly, Valoo was acting uncharacteristically violent due to a Gohma messing with his tail, reinforcing Komali's shy, withdrawn demeanor. When Link arrives at the island, the Chieftain gives him a letter to give to Komali, telling him to be brave. When Link speaks with him, Komali is sullen and disbelieving Link could ever help with Valoo, thinking Link is merely bragging. He does say, however, that if Link were to find someone who could help with Valoo, that he would listen to him.

After Link destroys the Gohma, an impressed Komali gives Link the Pearl, saying that parting with it should give him the courage he needs for what is ahead, then goes off to see Valoo, promising to meet Link again soon. He is not seen again until Link and Tetra invade the Forsaken Fortress, where a now-winged and slightly grown Komali, Quill, and Valoo rescue them from Ganondorf.

Following this, Komali is away from Dragon Roost Island for a while, returning once Medli awakens as a sage. Medli insists on leaving without saying good-bye to him, as she wants him to know her only as a simple attendant. The now confident Komali brings with him a flower he hopes to give to her, but it wilts as he waits for her, much to his disappointment.

Komali finally appears during the ending, where he finds Link and Tetra after they surface from Hyrule's flooding. He brings with him the pirates, Aryll, Medli, and Makar.

Trivia[edit]

  • Komali's noticeable physical growth may be an artifact from an early point in the game's design where Link was intended to subtly grow physically throughout the game.
