(It's not much of a name, but the creature doesn't get called a "river devil" in Japanese. The message mentions a river and a devil, but not as a name; it says "マモノガ カワニ スミツイテ タビビト ヲ タベテシマウ・・")

First appearance Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (1987)

The River Devil is an unique enemy who appears in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. Although it is an enemy, the River Devil serves more as an obstacle. It is a black figure with six spider-like appendages.

The River Devil is found on the overworld, where it blocks the only road that connects the northern and southern halves of Hyrule. According to the town folk, the River Devil eats weak people (which is never shown) and dislikes noise. If Link approaches the River Devil and plays the Flute, it disappears, allowing Link to continue his journey.

In the original Family Computer Disk System release, the River Devil is instead depicted as a dark red monster.
