In-game description, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

The Gust Jar is a dungeon item that appears in a few games of The Legend of Zelda series. It is a large jar that can rapidly intake air and release it in bursts of varying sizes. The Gust Jar first appears in The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap.

History[edit]

The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap[edit]

In The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, the Gust Jar is the first main dungeon item, and is found in Deepwood Shrine.

Link can use the Gust Jar to rapidly intake air for as long as he holds it. The Gust Jar clears away dust and sucks in nearby enemies, objects, and items such as Rupees. As the Gust Jar intakes air, it quickly turns from blue to yellow and then again to red; with each phase, the Gust Jar spins faster, increasing its suction force, and its sound also changes between each phase. When Link stops the Gust Jar's intake, it shoots out a burst of wind that can push objects and blow away dust. The wind gust's size and distance is affected by the Gust Jar's color. While Minish sized, Link can take advantage of the wind gusts to move a lily pad in the opposite direction so that he can travel over deep waters. In certain dungeons, there are mushrooms positioned at nearby gaps, which Link can only get across by drawing a mushroom's cap into the Gust Jar's opening so that the mushroom launches afar.

The Gust Jar can draw in objects, such as rocks, and standard enemies, such as Peahats and Octoroks, and suction them onto its opening. When Link releases the Gust Jar, the object or enemy is rapidly shot out as a projectile, and is usually destroyed upon hitting another solid object or wall.

The Gust Jar is the main method of defeating certain enemies. Puffstools must have all of their dust blown or sucked off before Link can attack them with his sword. If the Gust Jar is red, it can instantly suck in all of a Puffstool's spores. Link can also use the Gust Jar on a Helmasaur to draw in its mask, exposing the Helmasaur's vulnerable body. One of the ways that Link can instantly defeat a Keese is by sucking it into the Gust Jar.

The Gust Jar is required to defeat two bosses, the Big Green Chuchu and the Big Blue Chuchu. In both battles, Link must use the Gust Jar to suck the jelly out of either boss's base, causing them to lose balance and fall over. Despite being essential in defeating two large ChuChu bosses, the Gust Jar has no effect on regular ChuChus.

The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes[edit]

The Gust Jar makes a reappearance in The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes. They are found on various Item Podiums. With a Gust Jar, a Link can blow the other ones across wide gaps. The Gust Garb increases the speed and distance of blowing.
