Hokkubokkus, formerly known as Bouncers,[1] are tall, orange creatures made up of bouncy segments.

History[edit]

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past[edit]

In The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Bouncers have four total segments and appear solely in Turtle Rock, with the first one encountered carrying a Small Key. They hop around rooms in diagonal patterns, bouncing off walls when they hit them. To defeat them, the head must be damaged enough, but in order to do that, the segments must first be knocked away. Once a body segment is hit, it will begin violently rebounding off the walls, though another hit will destroy it. The more segments are lost, however, the quicker and further the creature will bounce. When segments are destroyed, they usually leave behind heavily regenerative items, such as faeries and giant Magic Decanters, though they will vanish by themselves without leaving anything behind after hitting the walls a few times.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds[edit]

In The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, a single Hokkubokku appears as a miniboss in the Desert Palace, never respawning after being defeated. It starts out underneath the sand, poking its head in and out throughout the room and immediately diving under if Link approaches or attempts to attack it. Link must use the Sand Rod to uproot it when its head is visible. After this, it will act the same as in A Link to the Past, though it faces the direction it hops, the rebounding segments only vanish after being attacked or hitting Link, and the segments no longer give heavy restorative items. When it is defeated, a Treasure Chest with a Small Key appears, though due to its position it cannot be obtained until after gaining the Titan's Mitt.

The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes[edit]

In The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes, Hokkubokkus have three total segments but are overall larger than before, making them as tall as the three Links in Totem position. They are also much more aggressive, deliberately pursuing the Links rather than their oblivious movements from before. By using the Totem position or Water Rod, the heads can be attacked before the body, defeating them early. If they are fought the traditional way, they will instead hop away from the Links when only the head remains, eventually digging back into the sand and regenerating the full body. They appear in the fourth stage of Infinity Dunes as well as the Desert Zone of the Den of Trials.
