Grandma Yahoo

Grandma Yahoo, also named Grandma Ulrira[1][2] or Grandma Ulriria[3], is an elderly woman and the wife of Old Man Ulrira. She appears in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and lives in Mabe Village with her husband. She first appears outside Old Man Ulrira's house. She is the counterpart of the Sweeping Lady from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Grandma Yahoo has an outgoing personality. She usually sweeps her broom. Her name is derived from her catchphrase "YAHOO!", which she says at the start of most of her quotes.

After Link obtains the broom from Mr. Write, Grandma Yahoo appears in the Animal Village. When Link talks to Grandma Yahoo, she says that her broom has worn out from overuse. If Link gives her the new broom, she trades it for the Fishing Hook, which she found while sweeping around the riverbank.

  • In the Nintendo 3DS's Virtual Console re-release of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, most instances of Grandma Ulrira saying "YAHOO!" were changed to "YIPPEE!", though one of her quotes changes it to "HELLO!" instead. This change is likely because "YAHOO!" is trademarked by the company Yahoo!. Her catchphrase was reinstated in the Nintendo Switch remake. The name went unchanged in the Japanese Virtual Console re-release because the language uses a different word for her catchphrase and the web company.[4]
  • In earlier releases, there are a few screen transition glitches where some enemy sprites are replaced with that of Grandma Ulrira's.[citation needed]
