- “...The insects of darkness... They are the form taken...by the evil that attached itself...to my scattered light...”
- – Faron, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Shadow Insects[citation needed], also known as Twilit Parasites[1], are twilight-based insects from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. They are pieces of evil that consumed a Tear of Light from a broken light spirit. They are invisible aside from occasionally sparking, but by using his senses, Wolf Link is able to "see" them. Additionally, they emit a wavering noise when nearby. Additionally, spirits can see them and are generally terrified and baffled by their size, becoming more confused when they seemingly die for no reason due to not seeing Link. Aside from sparking, Shadow Insects are incapable of attacking, though they can do various things to escape Link, such as crawling on floors or walls and digging. Some that look slightly different are capable of flight and generally stay out of direct reach, swooping down while sparking. In the original, there are sixteen Shadow insects per province, though in Twilight Princess HD, the number has been reduced to twelve.
A giant parasitic insect resembling a Shadow Insect controls Ook by perching on his head. If it is indeed a Shadow Insect, it is the only one encountered outside of the twilight. Additionally, the final Shadow Insect encountered is a massive one in Lake Hylia called the Twilit Bloat.
