Cheep Cheeps,[1] sometimes formatted as Cheep-Cheeps,[2] formerly named Cheep-Sheeps[3][4] and generically named fish,[5] are underwater fish enemies that appear in several The Legend of Zelda games, the first one being The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. They originate from the Mario franchise. They mainly attack by swimming back and forth.
History
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening / The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX
Cheep-Cheeps first appear in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX. Cheep-Cheeps only appear in side-scrolling, subterranean areas, including dungeons. Cheep-Cheeps only swim back and forth and do not actively target Link. He can defeat a Cheep-Cheep with a single hit from his sword or another weapon. If hit by a Cheep-Cheep, Link loses half a heart of his health. They appear in the underwater passages of Angler's Tunnel and Catfish's Maw. If Link is outside the water, a Cheep-Cheep sometimes jumps up at him. While it does this, Link can use the Roc's Feather to jump on the Cheep-Cheep and defeat it.
In the Nintendo Switch remake, a Cheep Cheep figure is a prize in the Trendy Game, and can be placed on a stand in old man Ulrira's house.
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Season / The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages
Cheep Cheeps also appear in The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages. They act the same as in Link's Awakening, although Link can no longer defeat Cheep Cheeps by jumping on them.
The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures
Cheep Cheeps reappear in The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures. A giant variant of Cheep Cheep also appears in the game which, unlike normal ones, charges at players.
Official profiles and descriptions
Zelda Universe
- "Cheep-Sheep are unusual fish who opt to live in the murky waters which stagnate deep in the dungeons of Koholint Island. They sporadically leap from the water, often smacking a passer-by in the face."
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
- Player's Guide: "These finny fiends jump out of the water and attack in the side-scrolling areas. They're easy to avoid or defeat with the Sword."
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX
- Prima Games guide: "These little nuisances jump around in watery areas. Walk by them or eliminate them when they jump out of the water."
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons / The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages
- Prima Games guide: "These slow-moving underwater creatures are easily defeated with a sword."
