First appearance The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons (2001)

Onox, the self-proclaimed General of Darkness, is the main antagonist of The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons. He is a ruthless tyrant whose goal is to destroy Holodrum.

Onox is a giant character who wears thick golden armor and carries around a flail like a Ball and Chain Soldier. Onox's outfit heavily resembles that of an Iron Knuckle. Onox has a pointed helmet, and on his chest plate is a red Gerudo Crest. Onox's full body is never shown.

History

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons

Around the start of The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons, Onox appears as a tornado to kidnap Din and imprison her in a giant crystal. Onox then banishes the Temple of Seasons to Subrosia, heavily damaging it in the process, and the Rod of Seasons lost its power. With Din kidnapped, Onox uses her power to turn Holodrum into a dying land by putting its seasons into chaos. In addition, Onox's army, along with various monsters, start to ravage the land. Meanwhile, Onox remains in his castle throughout most of Link's journey.

Near the end of his journey, Link manages to obtain all eight Essences of Nature. Link goes to the Maku Tree, who gives him a Huge Maku Seed, allowing Link to penetrate the barrier surrounding Onox's Castle. On the top floor of Onox's Castle, Link gets into an elongated battle with Onox. He tries to attack Link using his giant flail, and Onox's armor protects him from almost all of Link's attacks. Onox also attacks by leaping up and then slamming onto the ground, causing rubble to fall from the ceiling. Later during the battle, Onox uses Din (who is in still encased within her crystal) as an electric shield. With the Rod of Seasons, Link must swat Din's crystal away to leave Onox open to attack.

When defeated, Onox becomes a gigantic, demonic armored dragon and reveals he came from the Dark Realm. Onox attacks from the air with his large claws (which Link can use as platforms), red fireballs, and blue flames that spread on the ground. Onox's weakness is the gem adorning his head. Link manages to defeat Onox, but as it turns out, Onox was only gathering the powers of destruction from the dying lands of Holodrum to light the Flame of Destruction for Koume and Kotake in their plan to resurrect Ganon.

Trivia

OoS Onox unused art.jpg
  • In the initial Nintendo Power coverage for The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons, Onox was referred to by his Japanese name of Gorgon.
  • In preliminary artwork, Onox is depicted with a large battleaxe, similar to those used by Iron Knuckles in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, with a flail attached.
  • Onox's strategy in his second form is based on that of Wolf Sigma in the first Mega Man X title, right down to having a weak spot in the same general area. This is supported by how both it and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons were developed by Capcom.
