Differences from original

It has been requested that this article be rewritten and expanded to add some small details.

The game is largely based on the GameCube version, with models and level design most closely resembling that version. However, the game is in wide-screen, just like the Wii version. By virtue of being in HD, the game is in a higher with improved textures and lighter. The game overall is more vibrant and colorful, with the bloom effect of the original toned down considerably. While the GameCube and Wii controllers are not compatible with this version, the Wii U game pad and Pro Controller are, which is reflected in the UI on screen and in menus.

The menu is always on the gamepad while playing and can be accessed at anytime without pausing and disrupting the flow of the game. The ability to swap Link between human and wolf form is now tied to a button on the game play to increase gameplay speed. Both the gamepad and the pro controller use their built in gyroscopes for aiming, similar to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. The entire game is also playable on the gamepad through the Off-TV Play feature.

Scanning the Wolf Link amiibo unlocks Cave of Shadows, a gauntlet dungeon exclusive to Twilight Princess HD. Scanning the Link and Toon Link amiibo replenishes arrows. Scanning the Zelda and Sheik amiibo replenishes hearts. Scanning the Ganondorf amiibo makes Link take twice the normal damage of every enemy attack.

Hero Mode is an optional hard mode where enemies deal double the normal damage and hearts do not appear anywhere in the overworld. The mode can be freely turned on and off at any point. Scanning the Ganondorf amiibo in Hero Mode unlocks a hidden extra hard mode where deal quadruped the normal damage.
