Link's uncle[1][2] (also formatted as Link's Uncle[3]) is a character who appears in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. He is a swordsman and the uncle of Link, and both of them live in a house in the center of the Light World.
History[edit]
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past[edit]
At the start of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Link's uncle receives a distress signal from Princess Zelda, so he equips a sword and shield and leaves his house to try and rescue her. Just before leaving, Link's uncle instructs Link to stay at home and that he will return in the morning. Link also hears Zelda's call for help, so he also leaves to rescue her.
Later, when Link goes down a secret entrance of Hyrule Castle to the first basement floor, he finds his uncle, who is mortally wounded from battle. Just before dying, Link's uncle gives his sword and shield to Link and teaches him the Spin Attack.
In the ending, Link touches the Triforce and wishes for everything to return to normal. The end sequence shows that Link's uncle was revived, as he and Link both outside the house, practicing with their swords.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (comic)[edit]
In the comic adaptation of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past by Shotaro Ishinomori, Link's uncle is shown to specifically be mortally wounded from a battle against Agahnim himself. Later, while Link is hiking across the Desert back from the Desert Ruins, Link finds a warp where he can see that his uncle's spirit, along with those of his parents, are trapped in the Dark World. All three spirits appear to Link in the end after he has recovered the Triforce from Ganon.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (manga)[edit]
In the manga adaptation of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past by Akira Himekawa, Link's uncle harvests from an apple orchard with his nephew in the beginning. Like the comic adaptation, he is killed by Agahnim. In his dying breaths, he tells Link his parents are still alive somewhere.

Physical appearance[edit]
Link's uncle has a plump physique, and he has indigo hair (black in various artwork), a round nose, and a thick mustache. In the game, Link's uncle wears a green shirt, yellow pants, and brown shoes. Artwork of Link's uncle depicts him with a teal shirt and pants, a belt with a yellow circle of the Triforce emblem, black shoes, and is carrying a handbag on his left shoulder.

Trivia[edit]
- In the original Super Nintendo version and the Virtual Console re-releases, when Link finds his uncle mortally wounded from battle, Link's uncle talks to him but cuts off mid-sentence and dies as he says "Zelda is your...". In the Game Boy Advance version of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Link's uncle has a different speech before dying. Instead of cutting off mid-sentence, Link's uncle briefly pauses a few times between his last two sentences where he instructs Link to carry on and that he will always have fond memories of their time together.
- In the German Player's Guide of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, it is mentioned that Link's uncle gave him the green tunic on his birthday.[4]
