Midna, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Darkhammer[1] is Ball and Chain-wielding Darknut encountered as the miniboss of Snowpeak Ruins in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Functionally, it is similar to a Ball and Chain Trooper mixed with the Nintendo 64 depiction of Iron Knuckles. Under its armor, it appears to be a stocky, orange, humanoid lizard akin to a Lizalfos, though it is only seen without armor from behind. It is encountered beneath the bedroom of the ruins, in a circular armory that is functionally a thin hallway due to metal bars.

When Link enters its room, it appears as an empty set of armor, standing with its back to an identical set. Once Link crosses the room, the doors are barricaded and Darkhammer comes to life, using its weapon to destroy the other suit. To attack, Darkhammer wildly swings its Ball and Chain while approaching Link extremely slowly. To get past it unharmed, Link needs to use the Clawshot to grab the ceiling behind it. A few seconds after he passes it, it will throw the ball at him, which deals large damage and launches him to the end of the room if it connects. Regardless, Darkhammer is vulnerable after throwing it, due to its hunched posture exposing its unprotected tail. It pulls the ball back and stands up straight shortly afterward, making it invulnerable again, and begins swinging again a few moments later. To defeat it, its tail must be successfully attacked three times, causing Darkhammer to explode and leave the Ball and Chain behind for Link to collect. The Mortal Draw or two bomb arrows can also defeat it.

Trivia

  • In the next room, identical sets of armor can be found, and can be destroyed with the Ball and Chain. One such suit contains an Ice Bubble that leaves behind a valuable orange Rupee upon defeat.
  • Darkhammer's initial concept artwork shows it with a vastly different design; rather than a full suit of armor, it wears the top of a horned skull on its head. Otherwise, it resembles a stout, purple Lizalfos.
