- “One, two, three! Is that a lot? I need to learn my numbers.”
- – Tokay, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages
Tokay are the reptilian inhabitants of Crescent Island in The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages, appearing as a tribe of humanoid carnivorous lizard people. Tokay are generally friendly, but seem to have a difficult time recognizing outsiders, assuming Link is a long-eared tailless Tokay and that Dimitri is a fish. Most Tokay are green, though orange and red ones appear at the Wild Tokay game and museum. Whenever Tokay speak, a loud bellowing sound effect plays.
Link first meets the Tokay after he gets caught in an ocean squall in the past. Washing on the island's shore, he is quickly robbed of his items by several Tokay, who run off in a panic upon realizing he is not actually dead. Link must first get his shovel back (done with help from Rosa in a linked game) and then track the rest down. Some of his items must be bartered for with Mystical Seeds or the shovel at Tokay Traders. Other Tokay offer advice about how plants slowly grow, hinting how ones planted in the past will be grown in the present. After Link leaves the island for the first time, returning and speaking to them again will cause most to complain of hunger. One in a hidden cave at sea level has kept a shield (either the Iron Shield or Mirror Shield, depending on Link's current shield type), and gives the "scrap wood" to Link upon finding him.
