Phantom Eyes are disembodied extensions of Phantoms that patrol mazes alongside them, floating along the ground with a propeller underneath. Unlike Phantoms, they are extremely weak, but are capable of seeing in every direction at a time. If they see Link, they will follow him while ringing to alert the Phantoms.

History

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

In The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Phantom Eyes debut in the third visit to the Temple of the Ocean King. They float back-and forth or in a loop along preset paths and will notice Link if he gets too close while not in a safe zone. The boomerang can stun them, while most other weapons can defeat them. However, the player needs to keep range in mind when dealing with them lest they are spotted. If one sees Link and he does not get to a safe zone quickly, it will begin to cling to him, slowing his movements. The player can remove it by rapidly rubbing the screen horizontally with the stylus. Regardless of whether it is removed this way or he goes into a safe zone, the Phantom Eye will fly upwards, disappear, and shortly reappear in its original spot. Sometimes, being caught by one causes another Phantom to spawn. Defeating all Phantom Eyes on a floor always causes a Treasure Chest to appear. A certain "cursed" slab of rock can spawn more Phantom Eyes if it is read.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks

In The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, Phantom Eyes have the same basic role. However, they are also used as the points Zelda can warp to while possessing a Warp Phantom. Due to this, they sometimes respawn if defeated.
