“You got a Deku Stick! On the Select Item Subscreen, you can set it to Camera left Button, Camera up Button or Camera right Button. Set it to Camera buttons and swing it with Camera buttons! When you want to put it away, stand still and press A Button. You can carry up to 10 sticks, but don't waste them.”
In-game description

Deku Sticks are items that appear in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask and their Nintendo 3DS remakes. They are the long, dried-up stalks of a Deku Baba, although they directly resemble a wooden branch. Their main purpose is to light up torches and other flammable objects, such as spider webs.

Deku Sticks can also be used as a weapon, although they are usually ineffective because they break just after striking at an object or enemy. Link can assign the Deku Stick to one of the C buttons (or X, Y, I, and II in the 3DS remakes), and Link can ignite the tip of a Deku Stick if it touches fire. The fire quickly wears out from a Deku Stick, after a couple of seconds, which causes Link to lose the stick. Link must often quickly move the Deku Stick to an unlit torch before this occurs. To prevent an ignited Deku Stick from dying out, Link can return the Deku Stick in his Inventory.

The main method for Link to obtain a Deku Stick is by slashing his Kokiri Sword at a Deku Baba while it stands straight up. In both games, Link can also purchase some Deku Sticks at some locations.

In their debut appearance, Deku Sticks are one of the first items that Link can obtain. Aside from obtaining them through normal means, Link can buy Deku Sticks at the Kokiri Shop for ten Rupees apiece. According to the description, these sticks were acquired from the Great Deku Tree. Later on in his adventure, Link can also buy a Deku Stick from some Business Scrubs at a higher price of 15 rupees.

By default, Link can only carry up to ten Deku Sticks. However, he can increase this total to 30 through either one of two methods: by paying 40 rupees to a Business Scrub in the Forbidden Woods or by wearing the Skull Mask in the Forest Stage area. Link can only use Deku Sticks as a child. As an adult, Link can use Fire Arrows or Din's Fire as a replacement for lighting torches.

Deku Sticks have a very similar role in the sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Link can also purchase a Deku Sticks at the Trading Post for ten Rupees apiece.
