History[edit]

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time[edit]

InThe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mad Scrubs act much like normal Deku Scrubs, spitting nuts at Link in a similar manner to Octoroks' rocks. Unlike normal Deku Scrubs, Mad Scrubs may shoot a volley of three nuts instead of just one at a time. They hide in their Deku Flowers when approached, but can be attacked directly if Link is quick enough, particularly with the larger range of adult Link's weapons. Additionally, they can be attacked with projectiles or bouncing their own back at them, though when two collide, both are destroyed. When damaged, Mad Scrubs are uprooted from the Deku Flowers and flee backwards in an erratic manner, eventually trying to return to the flower. Attacking them again defeats them, unlike the other types of Deku Scrubs in the game who ask for mercy before leaving. Mad Scrubs are found at the Sacred Forest Meadow in the past and the overrun Kokiri Forest in the future. Master Quest adds them to a few dungeons, such as inside the Deku Tree (where they replace normal Deku Scrubs for much of it) and Dodongo's Cavern.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask[edit]

In The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Mad Scrubs act slightly differently from before. They now spit nuts in an arc, which no longer bounce back when shielded. They also are instantly defeated when attacked due to appearing primarily on high platforms. Defeating them opens up their Deku Flowers for Deku Link's use. They appear in the upper portion of the Deku Palace's gardens and around Woodfall. Several Mad Scrubs appear in Link's vision during his initial transformation into Deku Link from Majora's Mask's curse, culminating in being chased by a giant one. When he is cured of his curse, another vision shows him waving at the giant Mad Scrub as it disappears. Several Mad Scrubs also appear as targets at the Swamp Shooting Gallery, some of which have their leafy "hair" pointing upwards. Finally, several passive Mad Scrubs spectate Link's progress through the Deku Shrine, with several being congregated in the final room.
