Navi is a fairy in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time who serves as Link's companion. Navi helps Link throughout his adventure, occasionally offering information about Link's next objective or identifying enemies or objects that are targeted.

In The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tatl, another fairy, plays a similar role to Navi, accompanying Link throughout his adventure.

Creation[edit]

During the development of Z-targeting in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, an upside-down triangle was used to mark what was being targeted. Developer Yoshiaki Koizumi, not fond of using such a simple marker, created Navi to be used instead of the triangle. According to Koizumi, Navi's simple design comes from the limitations of the Nintendo 64 hardware. Her name, which was originally known by the developers as the "Fairy Navigation System," was derived from "navigation," referring to her function in-game.[1]

At the beginning of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Navi is sent by the Great Deku Tree to Link, whom he believes to be the hero of legend who will rid Hyrule of evil. Navi brings Link to the Deku Tree and accompanies him on his adventure. After Link defeats Ganon and returns the Master Sword to its pedestal in the Temple of Time, Navi flies away to an unknown location.

Navi allows the player to Z-target, allowing the camera to lock on to enemies, objects, or people while Z Button is pressed, and she informs Link about what he is targeting if Camera up Button is pressed in the Nintendo 64 version, or if her icon on the touch screen is tapped in the Nintendo 3DS version. Navi also usually offers information about Link's next objective after a cutscene, or if Camera up Button is pressed when not locked on to something. She occasionally alerts the player that she has information by saying "Hey!", "Listen!", "Look!", or "Hello!". If A Button is pressed while Link is standing still, Navi appears and floats around him for a few seconds before disappearing.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask[edit]

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask begins with Link deep in the Lost Woods in a search for Navi, before being ambushed by Skull Kid, Tatl, and Tael, and subsequently beginning his adventure in Termina. While it is never explicitly stated to be Navi whom Link is searching for, it is heavily implied to be her. After Link defeats Majora's Mask and saves Termina, he returns to the Lost Woods to continue his search for Navi.
