History

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

In The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Malon lives on Lon Lon Ranch with Talon and Ingo. Due to Talon's laziness, Malon and Ingo are responsible for most of the farm work. During her childhood, Malon uses "fairy boy" as a nickname for Link. Malon has a more prominent role as a child than as an adult, as her role is optional for the latter.

Link first encounters Malon on the path to Hyrule Castle. She tells him that her father, Talon, has gone missing while delivering Lon Lon Milk to the castle. Malon gives the Weird Egg to Link as a present. When Link finds Talon, he can wake him up with the Cucco that hatched from the Weird Egg. When Talon wakes up, he realizes that Malon was looking for him, so he rushes back to Lon Lon Ranch in panic.

The second time Link encounters Malon is at Lon Lon Ranch. She introduces her horse Epona to Link, although the horse is shy of him. Malon sings Epona's Song and invites Link to sing with her. Link takes out his ocarina, and Malon teaches him how to play Epona's Song on it.

During the time when Link is an adult, Ingo took over Lon Lon Ranch, and Malon continues working at the ranch, under his leadership. She is unwillingly ordered around by Ingo, because he threatens to abuse the horses if she disobeys him. According to Malon, Ingo wants to present Epona to Ganondorf, but he struggles to tame Epona because she only listens to Malon.

After Talon returns to Lon Lon Ranch, Malon hosts an optional minigame challenge where Link must do two laps around an obstacle course while riding Epona. If Link beats Malon's time, she rewards him with a cow, which grants unlimited Lon Lon Milk refills, and sends it to his house.

According to a Gossip Stone, Malon hopes for the day when a knight in shining armor comes and sweeps her off her feet.
