Composer Brothers

The Composer Brothers, also referred to as the Royal Composer Bros., are a pair of Poes that consists of brothers Flat the Younger and Sharp the Elder. The duo appear in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Before their deaths, the Composer Brothers served as composers to the Royal Family of Hyrule and Ikana's Royal Family.

Flat and Sharp's names are derived from the musical symbols flat and sharp. A flat is one half step above a note, and a sharp is one half step below. This is parallel to Sharp being the older brother and Flat being the younger.

In The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the Composer Brothers have the Triforce symbol on their clothes. In The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, the emblem is replaced by a partial version of the crest of Ikana's Royal Family.

History[edit]

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time[edit]

Prior to the events of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Flat the Younger and Sharp the Elder were renowned musical composers who served the Royal Family of Hyrule. They also studied the mystical powers of the Royal Family, and completed their study on the flow of time being controlled with ocarinas, although they never figured out the secret to the Triforce. One day, Ganondorf tried to steal their research, presumably to search for the Triforce. The Composer Brothers did not want Ganondorf to have their research, so they sacrificed their lives to safeguard it from Ganondorf.

In the game, the Composer Brothers are located beneath tombstones in the graveyard, in front of a large tombstone located above the Royal Family's Tomb. At first, if Link reads one of their tombstones, the respective Composer Brother, referred to simply as a Poe of the graveyard (or "Poe of the graveyard?") by Navi, attacks him. If Link defeats either or both of the Composer Brothers, they apologize and explain their backstory, revealing that they were working on two songs, to summon the sun or moon respectively. This led to the creation of the Sun's Song, which summons either the sun or moon depending on the time of day.

If Link leaves Kakariko Graveyard and re-encounters the Composer Brothers, they attack him again, and Link must defeat them to quell them again.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask[edit]

In The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Flat and Sharp worked for Ikana's Royal Family when the Ikana Kingdom was still thriving. However, they are among the restless spirits stirred by Majora's Mask's actions, with Sharp deciding to ally himself with it, ending up fully under its control.

Trivia[edit]

  • The Composer Brothers are possibly based on Mario and Luigi. Sharp is similar to Mario, being the shorter brother with some maroon on his cloak. Flat is similar to Luigi, being the taller and younger brother with some green on his cloak.
  • Unlike most other Poe souls, theirs are green and smiling, likely to show that they are not actually malevolent. Other souls like this can sometimes be seen in the Ghost Shop, however.
