The Magic Rod, also known as the Magical Rod, is an item that appears in The Legend of Zelda and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. It functions very similar to the Fire Rod, as it can shoot blasts of magic spells to damage enemies and light torches. It is the type of wand also used by Wizzrobes.[1]

History[edit]

The Legend of Zelda series[edit]

The Legend of Zelda[edit]

In The Legend of Zelda, the Magical Rod, also known as the magic wand,[2] shoots a beam resembling those of Wizzrobe. When the Magical Rod is equipped, Link can use it like a sword to strike enemies and shoot magical spells. The Magical Rod is as powerful as the White Sword.

If Link has the Book of Magic, the Magical Rod can shoot beams that burst into flames upon hitting a wall or a surface. With this, the Magical Rod serves as an alternative to the Candle.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening[edit]

In The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, the Magic Rod is the main dungeon item of Turtle Rock. It can shoot an endless number of fireballs without the need for the Book of Magic. The Magic Rod is one of the most powerful weapons, dealing twice as much damage as the Koholint Sword. The Magic Rod is essential for navigating Turtle Rock, as it can melt the blocks of ice in Link's path. It is required during the battle against Hot Head.

In The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, the Magic Rod has a pink cap.

Hyrule Warriors[edit]

In Hyrule Warriors, the Magical Rod is one of the types of Magic Rods that can be obtained. Like the other rods, it is capable of blasting fire and summoning pillars of flames to attack enemies, although it has low defense. The Magical Rod has an 8-bit equivalent named the 8-Bit Candle as of the Master Quest Pack, and in Hyrule Warriors Legends and Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition, it has two upgraded versions named the Magical Rod + and Crackling Rod. An 8-Bit version of it appears as of the Twilight Princess Pack, known as the 8-Bit Magical Rod?, which acts as a spear.

Trivia[edit]

  • The Great Hyrule Encyclopedia erroneously considers the Magic Rod and the Fire Rod to be the same item.[3]
  • In The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, when Link obtains the Magic Rod, the obtain text reads "Burn, baby, burn!", referencing the song "Disco Inferno" from the 1970s disco band, The Trammps. This reference does not appear in the Japanese version[4] or the Nintendo Switch remake.
