History[edit]

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time[edit]

In The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, whenever a Poe or a Big Poe is defeated, their lantern is dropped on to the ground, releasing a Poe Soul or a Big Poe Soul respectively. Ordinary Poe Souls are depicted as being light purple apparitions, but Big Poe Souls have a distinct orange coloration.

In The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Poe Souls are fragments of Jovani's soul, which he sold to Imp Poes in exchange for becoming rich. In the game, Poe Souls were redesigned to be a dark purple orb covered in an effulgent, red glow.

At one point during the game, Link must sneak into Hyrule Castle as a Wolf Link and meet Princess Zelda. On his route, he enters a strange house filled with riches and a golden statue. This golden statue turns out to be Jovani, who had sold his soul for endless riches. His soul was split into 60 pieces, each one being held by an Imp Poe. Jovani and his cat, Gengle, were both turned into solid gold statues. To break the curse, he asks Link to hunt down these Poes and to retrieve their souls. Poe Souls can be found in various parts of Hyrule, including caves, open fields, and dungeons.

Once Link has obtained twenty Poe Souls, Jovani regains the ability to move, although the curse on his pigmentation remains. As thanks, Jovani presents him with a bottle of Great Fairy's Tears. Gengle is completely normal, but can't escape the house because the door is locked. When Link recovers all sixty Poe Souls, the curse on Jovani is completely broken. Jovani is saddened to learn that while he was cursed, his girlfriend left him for another man. As his reward, Gengle, not knowing what to do with all of the extra money, provides Link with an endless supply of Silver Rupees.
