Like Likes are upright tube-shaped monsters that appear throughout The Legend of Zelda series, starting with The Legend of Zelda. They are capable of swallowing Link, whose shield they eat, just before spitting him back out. In some games, Link can recover his stolen armor by defeating them, and in some games can also avoid having his shield stolen by wiggling free. They are commonly either gelatinous or worm-like, and usually a dull earthy color.

The Legend of Zelda series

The Legend of Zelda

Like Like TLoZ sprite.png

In The Legend of Zelda, Like Likes are introduced in the later dungeons. They eat Link's Magical Shield if they touch him, and he will be unable to get it back, and as such must he must buy another if the player wants to have one.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Highly atypical Like Likes appear in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. They appear as long-tongued, hopping plants that are called Pikits in the English guide. They are capable of eating a large number of Link's items, including Rupees and the Red Shield. However, they cannot eat the Mirror Shield. They appear outside the Swamp Palace and the Ice Palace.

In A Link to the Past + Four Swords, more traditional Like Likes appear alongside Pikits, appearing right outside the new Shield Shop and in the Palace of the Four Sword. They use their Game Boy sprites, but colored yellow.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

In The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Like Likes appear like they do in the first game, and can eat his normal shield, but not the unique Mirror Shield. If Link defeats a Like Like that ate his shield, he will be able to recover his shield from the beast. They first appear north of the Mysterious Woods. In Link's Awakening DX, they are shaded green.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

In The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Like Likes are green and slimy, constantly wiggling their mouths around. When Link approaches, they will move their mouth towards him while undulating it. If they successfully eat him, they can at his Deku Shield or Hylian Shield. In this game only, they are also capable of eating his special tunics. Everything they eat can be recovered. When defeated, they will appear to melt. They appear in the Bottom of the Well, Fire Temple, Spirit Temple, and Shadow Temple.

In Ocarina of Time 3D, they appear gray and much less slimy-looking, having a solid texture on their sides.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

In The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Like Likes are depicted as aquatic creatures, being found primarily in the waters of Great Bay. They are incapable of stealing anything except the Hero's Shield from normal Link. They use the same model and behaviors from Ocarina of Time, but come in two sizes, though they act exactly the same. One of the large ones stands in place in a waterfall basin, being placed directly over a Piece of Heart. At night, a few large ones can be found on the beaches. If Link wears the Stone Mask near these, they will still follow him, but not attempt to eat him. Defeating them usually gives Link 15 or 20 Rupees.

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons/Ages

In The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages, Like Likes look and act as they do in Link's Awakening. However, they are shaded blue. Link can use the Like Like Ring to turn into a Like Like, resembling the ones from Link's Awakening DX. In the former game, there is also a single location on the map that spawns an infinite amount of Like Likes from the sides of the screen.

The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

In The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Like Likes are brown and found in tunnels accessible with the Mole Mitts. They pop out of the ground in areas with space and no tall dirt, and slowly follow after Link. If Link goes to an area that previously had tall dirt, they will go back under and wait for him. If one captures him, he can escape with his shield if he wiggles enough. A popular book in the Hyrule Library is apparently about how to keep them as pets. A variant from Four Swords called Rupee Like also appears, being smaller and more yellow than normal Like Likes.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

In The Legend Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Like Likes appear as brown, lumpy, worm-like creatures. They are capable of sucking Link towards them like a vacuum. Otherwise, they act about the same as previously.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks

In The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, Like Likes act as they do in Phantom Hourglass, though they can now be found hiding inside wiggling pots.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

In The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Like Likes are primarily found in Lorule, specifically north of the Vacant House and Blacksmith's Forge. They are yellow and made up of two stacks of four skin flaps.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Like Likes are found in the Underground Labyrinth and rarely from crates or barrels. They will eat any fighter to come near, damaging them once they spit them out. In one area to the lower left, one will fall from above. They resemble their Ocarina of Time appearance, but darker green and with more animated sliminess. Their English trophy claims that their name comes from an old Hylian proverb negatively comparing world leaders to them, "Shield eaters and world leaders have many likes alike." In the Japanese version, however, it says it is a reference to a Japanese proverb 蓼食う虫も好き好き (To each their own tastes), substituting たて (shield) for the similarly-written たで (water pepper).

Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer featuring The Legend of Zelda

In Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer featuring The Legend of Zelda, Like Likes appear as enemies, where they are tan and lumpy.
