Sand Crabs, also known as Land Crabs,[1] or simply Crabs,[2] are a species of large, aggressive crustacean found in some fixed-camera games. Like most crabs, they move faster sideways than forwards or backwards.
History[edit]
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past[edit]
In The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Land Crabs appear around Lake Hylia. They are brown with green pincers, and move quite slowly when going up or down. When going sideways, however, they move extremely fast. They can be defeated easily, though their pincers deal a fair amount of damage.
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening[edit]
In The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Sand Crabs are among the first enemies Link will encounter, appearing on Toronbo Shores. They do not deal as much damage as before and now take more hits, but otherwise they act the same as before. In Link's Awakening DX, they are tinted red, while in the Nintendo Switch remake, they use their appearance from The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons/Ages[edit]
In The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages, Sand Crabs look and act as they do in Link's Awakening, but are tinted orange. In the former game, they appear along the Western Coast, while in the latter game, they appear on the present Crescent Island and in Jabu-Jabu's Belly.
The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures[edit]
In The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, Sand Crabs appear in large numbers on the Coast and look like they do in A Link to the Past, but with a more realistic body shape. They now solely move horizontally, still at high speeds.
The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks[edit]
Sand Crabs, called Lobarriers,[3] appear in the Ocean Realm in The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, first appearing at the Ocean Sanctuary. They are now lavender with a huge rocky claw resembling that of a fiddler crab. Like in Four Swords Adventures, they typically only move sideways, but now purposefully block Link in doing so. If he gets too close to one, it will swipe him away with its claw. If Link manages to get behind one, it will turn around to face him. To defeat them, Link can stun them by using the boomerang to hit their backsides, then follow up by attacking this part with the sword. Once he gets the whip, he can pull off their big claws, leaving them defenseless. At this point, they will scurry away from Link, very slowly sidling backwards.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds[edit]
In The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Sand Crabs look and act as they do in A Link to the Past, now additionally appearing in the Southern Ruins. In Lorule, a stronger version called a Karat Crab appears. Despite this, Sand Crabs inhabit Lorule as well, as they can be seen in the Octoball Derby minigame. If hit with the baseball, all the broken pots respawn.
